A Breakdown of Penn State Football’s 2027 Recruiting Class

Head Coach Matt Campbell.

Penn State Football’s coaching change temporarily erased their 2027 recruiting class, but new head coach Matt Campbell and his staff are hard at work building their first full freshman class. After getting a late start on the 2026 recruiting cycle, Campbell has a chance to find the players that fit his system and spend time building connections with them, helping to bring them to Happy Valley in the future.

As of Friday, May 8, the 2027 Penn State recruiting class has 15 commitments: six four-star recruits and nine three-stars. For comparison, their abbreviated 2026 class had 15 players; the 2025 class, James Franklin’s last, had 28. As such, Campbell and company are off to a strong start — ranking among the nation’s best — and have several players that fit the Nittany Lions’ recruiting archetype. Those include a standout tight end, a highly touted middle linebacker and a trio of cornerbacks, continuing their reputation as ‘TEU,’ ‘LBU’ and ‘DBU.’

Wide receiver Landon Blum ranks No. 288 on ESPN’s Top 300, the first member of Penn State’s class to make the list. The Nittany Lions are also recruiting the Upper Midwest hard, a natural area of expertise after Campbell brought much of his staff over from Iowa State.
