There are still more than seven months until the early signing period, but Penn State football’s 2027 recruiting class is near the top five.

247Sports has Penn State’s class ranked No. 6, one of four Big Ten teams occupying the top six. USC, Ohio State and Washington are three, four and five, respectively).

This is off the heels of a monster recruiting weekend. Penn State got four commits in three days. It started Friday. PSU landed a commitment from Owen Reilly, a three star interior offensive line prospect from Maryland’s Bel Air High School. The next day, three-star safety Jonathan Galette (Montvale, New Jersey) announced his commitment. Penn State followed that up with two commitments Sunday. The first was from a Pittsburgh guy named Jon Sassic, a three-star, 6-foot-6, 285-pound interior offensive lineman from Central Catholic. Less than two hours later, Penn State got its highest-ranked commit of the Kei’Shjuan Telfair, a four-star cornerback from Ohio’s Euclid High School. Telfair is the No. 93 overall prospect in the country from his class per 247Sports’ composite rankings, as well as the No. 12 DB and the No. 4 overall player in Ohio.

First-year coach Matt Campbell spoke late last month about his recruiting philosophy, pointing out that Penn State was “playing catchup in some ways.”

Penn State got off to a fast start with its ‘27 class, with in ranking amongst the best in the country.

When PSU fired James Franklin in October, everybody who had been committed de-committed within 24 hours, so Penn State had to start over.

“No different than I said about spring practice,” Campbell said. “Slow and right is critical, and it’s all about the human beings that we bring in here.”

“Obviously having the logo and the history of this place certainly gives you great opportunity to recruit in this region some of the best football in the entire world,” Campbell said. “And that part of it is rewarding.”
