Penn State’s first major official visit weekend of the summer has already produced another commitment.
Caleb Cooper, a three-star safety from Providence Day School in Charlotte, N.C., committed to Penn State on Monday following his official visit to State College.
Cooper gives Matt Campbell and safeties coach Deon Broomfield another defensive back in the Nittany Lions’ 2027 class and adds to what has quickly become one of the top recruiting groups in the country.
The 6-foot, 205-pound Cooper picked Penn State over a group that included Wisconsin, Virginia Tech and others.
According to On3, Cooper had official visits scheduled to Wisconsin and Virginia Tech later this month, but those trips are no longer expected to happen.
Cooper made 97 tackles, including five tackles for loss, with six pass breakups and an interception as a junior. He also forced two fumbles and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
The relationship with Broomfield played a major role in Penn State’s push. Broomfield had previously offered Cooper while at Iowa State, giving the Nittany Lions’ new staff a preexisting connection once Penn State entered the race.
Cooper told 247Sports that he believes Penn State is “moving in a direction” that is on an “upwards trajectory” under Campbell. He also praised Penn State’s history, campus and fan support after his visit.
Cooper is projected as a safety for Penn State. He joins New Jersey safety Jonathan Galette as the second safety commitment in the Nittany Lions’ 2027 class.
Penn State now continues to build momentum under Campbell as official visit season moves forward.
