Tonight, it was the 4-0 Penn State men’s basketball team hosting the 4-1 Harvard Crimson inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
At the first media timeout (15:12) it was Penn State 11, Harvard 7 with Josh Reed leading the way with four points and 7-footer, Ivan Juric, drilling a three from the top of the key.
After the timeout, the PSU bench came alive and scored 7 points. Dominick Stewart knocked in a three, Tibor Mirtic had a strong drive to the hoop and Sasa Ciani powered up a shot around the rim to make the score 18-12 Penn State.
At the 11:46 mark in the first half, it was Penn State 20, Harvard 12.
Harvard was staying in the game with great ball movement, which led to high percentage shots. At (9:12) it was Penn State 24, Harvard 19.
Behind 3-point makes from Chandler Pigge, Xavier Nesbitt and Thomas Batties, the Crimson made a run and took the lead, and with (3:50) left to play in the first half, it was Harvard 32, Nittany Lions 30.
Both teams kept trading baskets, and at the half it was Harvard 38, Penn State 35. Josh Reed had 7 points for the Nittany Lions and Freddie Dilione and Kayden Mingo had 6 points apiece. For the Crimson, it was Thomas Batties leading the way with 12 points going 4-for-4 from three-point range.
To start the second half, Mingo set the tone and had 4 quick points with beautiful drives to the hoop and Eli Rice came out firing with 5 points, and Penn State took the lead, 46-42, with (16:00) left in the second half.
Harvard took the lead again at the (13:04) mark and then Penn State got it right back with a three from Dilione, and at the media timeout (11:00) the score was tied, 55-55.
Mingo had an ‘and-1’ and completed the three-point play with (8:48) left in the game to make the score 60-59 in favor of Penn State. He then converted 2 free throws after getting fouled to make the score 62-59. With (7:15) left in the game, it was the Nittany Lions 64, Crimson 62.
With (5:00) left to play, it was PSU 70, Harvard 67 after a follow-up slam from Juric.
Harvard’s Chandler Pigge got fouled on a three-point shot and converted all three free throws to tie the game, 70-70, with (4:56) to play.
Penn State’s, Melih Tunca, scored four straight points to make the score PSU 74, Harvard 70 with (3:02) to play. He then had a drive to the basket with 38 seconds to play to make the score PSU 80, Harvard 76.
Harvard’s, Chandler Pigge, got fouled on a made three-point shot and converted the 4-point play. Penn State 82, Harvard 80 with 14 seconds left in the game.
Final Score: Nittany Lions 84, Crimson 80.
