Forward Charlie Cerrato became the fourth Penn State Nittany Lion in the last two days to take a step toward the professional ranks.
Rather than signing an amateur tryout agreement, Cerrato is forgoing his final two years of eligibility by signing a professional tryout with the Chicago Wolves, the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes.
Carolina selected Cerrato No. 49 overall in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
In two seasons at Penn State, Cerrato recorded 22 goals and 47 assists.
During the 2024-25 season, Cerrato posted the third-highest point total by a Penn State true freshman with 42, trailing only Denis Smirnov’s 47 in 2016-17 and Gavin McKenna’s 51 this season.
His performance earned him Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors.
Cerrato missed 15 games during his sophomore season because of an injury suffered in early January. Up to that point, he had been Penn State’s leader in assists (18), points (24), and top faceoff man.
Despite missing significant time, Cerrato still led the Nittany Lions by winning 58.7% of his faceoffs.
