The Penn State men’s basketball team has their second assistant coach on the move for next season.
On March 18, assistant coach, Joe Crispin, accepted the head coaching position at the Air Force Academy.
Now, the Nittany Lions’ associate head coach, Jamal Brunt, is leaving State College.
It is reported by Jon Sauber of the Centre Daily Times that Brunt accepted a position on Syracuse’s coaching staff.
Former standout player for the Orange, Gerry McNamara, was just named head coach at Syracuse on March 24.
Brunt just finished his third season with the Nittany Lions. He arrived in Happy Valley alongside head coach Mike Rhoades in 2023 after spending six seasons (2018–23) as an assistant under Rhoades at Virginia Commonwealth University. Brunt’s relationship with Rhoades dates back even further, as he also served on his staff at Randolph-Macon from 2003–05 and previously played for Rhoades with the Yellow Jackets.
Brunt’s main role on the coaching staff at Penn State was the team’s defense, and just this past season he was recognized as one of the Top 100 Most Impactful High Major Assistants, as announced by Silver Waves Media.
He enters a Syracuse program that went 15-17 overall this past season with an Atlantic Coast Conference record of 6-12.
