Penn State Women’s Basketball Legend, Kelly Mazzante, Back in Happy Valley

The all-time leading scorer in Lady Lion Basketball history is now back in Happy Valley, only this time coaching from the sidelines.

Kelly Mazzante, was announced today by head coach Tanisha Wright, as an assistant coach on her staff.

Mazzante brings much experience both as a player and as a coach to the Lady Lions.

She played for Penn State from 2000-04 and during her illustrious career, Mazzante finished as the Lady Lion all-time leading scorer with 2,919 points. This mark also ranks fourth all-time in the Big Ten Conference record book for both men and women.

Along with this Penn State record, the Williamsport, Pa. native is also in the PSU record book for multiple statistical categories including career scoring average (21.9), career 30-point games (27), career field goals (1,051), single-season field goals (716; 2001-02), single-game points (49) and single-game three-point field goals (9). She completed her decorated collegiate career with 2,919 points, 1,051 field goals, 563 rebounds, 357 three-point field goals, 289 steals and 237 assists.

After Penn State, Mazzante was then drafted as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Charlotte Sting. She was then picked up by the Phoenix Mercury, where she helped her team to two WNBA Championships in 2007 and 2009. She then concluded her WNBA career in 2009 with the Atlanta Dream.

After Mazzante’s professional playing days were over, the Montoursville product began her coaching career. She started out at IUP from 2014-19 as an assistant coach. She then went to Bucknell as an assistant and associate head coach from 2019-2023. From Lewisburg, Pa. she then moved onto Georgetown University where she was an assistant coach, recruiting coordinator and associate head coach for the Hoyas from 2023-2026.

Mazzante will be joined in Happy Valley by her wife, Alicia and daughter, Mila.
