Penn State basketball’s top signee of the ‘23 recruiting class, Carey Booth, has committed to Notre Dame.

Booth was the head of the table for coach Micah Shrewsberry’s second and, as it tuned out, final recruiting class as Penn State’s coach.

The four-star from Wolfboro, New Hampshire’s, Brewster Academy was the second-highest rated signee in program history behind Tony Carr, according to 247Sports.

Now, Booth is joining both Micah Shrewsberry and his son, Braeden, in South Bend. Braeden Shrewsberry, a three-star from State College High School, was the first to commit to Penn State’s ‘23 class, doing so in November 2021.

Unsurprisingly, Braeden is following his dad to Notre Dame.

Also unsurprisingly, more than a day after Micah Shrewsberry agreed to leave Penn State for Notre Dame, Booth requested a release from his scholarship.

Booth’s head coach at New Hampshire’s Brewster Academy, Jason Smith, first tweeted the news. Smith specifically said it was due to the coaching change, although that seemed to be a given.

Now, the loss of Booth is official. Although it’s not a surprise, it hurts Penn State and its fans on multiple levels.

As mentioned above, the 6-foot-8, 205-pound power forward is an excellent prospect.

He’s also a Penn State legacy.

His father, Calvin, starred for Penn State in the 1990s. Now, he’s the general manager of the Denver Nuggets.

Now that Booth and Shrewsberry are going to Notre Dame, the only signee from Penn State’s ‘23 Class that hasn’t left is Logan Imes. Imes is a three-star from Zionsville High School in Indiana. Imes committed to PSU in March 2022 and requested a release from his Letter of Intent in March 2023. Notre Dame is thought to be the favorite for Imes, too. This is mainly due to two factors. It’s due to him being from roughly 2.5 hours from South Bend and his close relationship with both Micah Shrewsberry and his son. Micah recruited him to Penn State. Braeden Shrewsberry was his AAU teammate.
