As college football enters Week 0, we inch closer to the dawn of the Matt Campbell era and many are wondering where Penn State will end up after his first season.
ESPN did its preseason bowl projections and both Mark Schlabach and Kyle Bonagura have Penn State making a bowl game but failing to make the College Football Playoff.
Schlabach and Bonagura both project Penn State to end up at the Citrus Bowl on January 2 in Orlando, Florida at Camping World Stadium.
Where they disagree is who the SEC opponent will be.
Schlabach projects Penn State to play Alabama.
The Crimson Tide have a decisive 10-5 advantage over Penn State, with Penn State’s lone bowl victory against Alabama happening at the 1959 Liberty Bowl.
Bonagura projects Texas A&M as Penn State’s bowl opponent.
The Nittany Lions and Aggies have faced off four times, with the Nittany Lions winning three of those matchups including 2-0 against Texas A&M in the Alamo Bowl.
Overall, Penn State has played in 57 bowl games with six appearances in the Citrus Bowl which is the second most appearances all time in the game.
The Nittany Lions have only won the game twice, defeating Tennessee in 1994 and LSU in 2010.
Campbell will look to match the feat of his predecessor James Franklin who is the only Penn State head coach to take a team to a bowl game in their first season. Franklin guided Penn State to the Pinstripe Bowl in 2014 defeating Boston College 31-30.
No. 17 (Coaches) / No. 18 (AP) Penn State will open the Matt Campbell era on September 5 against Marshall at 3:30 PM (Eastern) from Beaver Stadium.
