On Wednesday, word got out that Shrewsberry was leaving Penn State for Notre Dame.
He’ll be headed to South Bend after two seasons in Happy Valley.
Shrewsberry finished his time at Penn State with a 37-31 record, highlighted by one of the best seasons in school history this past year. The team made it to the NCAA Tournament and Big Ten Championship game for the first time since 2011 and won its first tournament game since 2001.
Now, he’ll be succeeding Mike Brey at Notre Dame, who was there for 23 seasons.
Shrewsberry started the statement by thanking the Penn State community.
”From the minute our family arrived in State College, you made the place feel like home,” Shrewsberry wrote.
He then thanked all the players he was “lucky to coach” at Penn State.
“The 2022 team laid a great foundation that allowed the 2023 team to reach unprecedented heights,” the statement read. “It’s hard to put into words what this team has meant to me. Their competitiveness, toughness, and teamwork all showed through in our toughest moments.”
Shrewsberry also thanked both athletic directors he worked for; Sandy Barbour, who hired him, and Pat Kraft, who took over for Barbour in July. He also thanked president Neeli Bendapudi as well.
”To Sandy Barbour, thank you for the tremendous opportunity— to Pat Kraft, President Bendapudi, and the rest of the Penn State administration, thank you for believing in us and this program’s vision.”
Shrewsberry ended the statement by thanking Penn State’s fanbase for “providing unrelenting support.”
“We couldn’t have done any of this without you,” he wrote.
