Rocco Becht Critics Miss One Crucial Fact: He Already Graduated

Transfer quarterback Rocco Becht looks to pass during 7 on 7.

In today’s world, outrage often spreads faster than context.

The latest example centers on Penn State quarterback Rocco Becht and the revelation that he will take just one class this fall while using his final season of college eligibility.

The quote that fueled the controversy was this:

“I don’t know what [class this fall], we haven’t picked it yet. We have to do that this coming week with school starting next week. I’m in one class.”

Those three sentences were enough to ignite social media.

Even U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana weighed in.

“Taking one online class is far from being a full-time student. My amendment to the Protect College Sports Act would address this. The ‘student’ in student-athlete should still matter so they are set up for success, wherever they go next.”

That prompted a response from Becht’s father, former NFL tight end Anthony Becht.

“Senator with all due respect, keep your mouth shut and stay in your lane. You have zero clue on this situation.”

The reality is that Cassidy, and many others criticizing Becht, missed the most important part of the story.

Rocco Becht has already graduated from Iowa State.

The question he was answering wasn’t about whether he was attending school. It was about what class he would be taking this fall.

Here’s the full context:

“I graduated with a communications degree from Iowa State and I came over here. I’m in a grad program, an organizational development and change program. Leadership classes, working in small-group type of classes. I’m doing that right now.

“In the fall I’ll have a class online. After that, I’ll get a certificate and then I’m able to pursue my master’s with those 12 credits. I don’t know what [class this fall], we haven’t picked it yet. We have to do that this coming week with school starting next week. I’m in one class. I guess it’s the perks of being graduated and being in a fifth-year.”

That changes everything.

If the criticism is simply that Becht is taking one class, it ignores the most important academic fact of all: he has already earned his undergraduate degree.

This isn’t unprecedented.

Former USC quarterback Matt Leinart returned for his senior season despite being projected as a potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft over Utah’s Alex Smith and Cal’s Aaron Rodgers.

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner and defending two-time national champion, Leinart famously enrolled in ballroom dancing during his final semester.

People laughed about the class.

What they didn’t do was question whether he had fulfilled his academic responsibilities. He had earned the right to enjoy his final year because he had already done the work.

Becht deserves the same perspective.

College athletics constantly preach that education matters. Players are encouraged to graduate, earn degrees and prepare for life after football.

So why is a quarterback being criticized for doing exactly that?

Becht didn’t cut corners. He completed his communications degree at Iowa State and is now pursuing graduate-level coursework in organizational development and leadership at Penn State. His lone class this fall is part of that academic path and not an attempt to game the system.

That’s continuing an education, not avoiding one.

It’s fair to debate whether NCAA eligibility rules should change. It’s fair to discuss whether graduate transfers should have different academic requirements.

But those are policy discussions.

Criticizing Rocco Becht personally without acknowledging that he already graduated is simply arguing without the full story.

Context still matters.

And in this case, it changes the entire conversation.
