Penn State commit Pierce Mbuyi is officially an NHL draft pick.
The Owen Sound Attack forward was selected by Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round in the 2026 NHL Draft, giving Penn State another future Nittany Lion tied to an NHL organization.
Mbuyi brings an intriguing profile to Pittsburgh. He is a high-motor winger with scoring touch, pace and competitiveness, traits that helped him become one of Owen Sound’s top offensive players.
During the 2025-26 season, Mbuyi posted 32 goals and 75 points in 68 regular-season games, while also taking on a leadership role with the Attack. His offensive game is built around energy, quickness and a dangerous shot, especially on the power play.
For Penn State, the selection adds another important NHL Draft moment to Guy Gadowsky’s program.
Mbuyi committed to the Nittany Lions in June 2025, giving Penn State a skilled, competitive forward with junior production and long-term upside. The Mississauga, Ontario, native is expected to continue developing before arriving in Hockey Valley, but his selection by Pittsburgh reinforces the level of talent Penn State is attracting.
Mbuyi is not viewed as a finished product. Like many young forwards, he will need to keep adding strength and rounding out his five-on-five impact. But the tools are clear: compete, skating, scoring instinct and leadership.
For the Penguins, the pick is a bet on upside. For Penn State, it is another sign that its recruiting reach and NHL visibility continue to grow.
