Penn State has been on a roll on the recruiting trail, landing its first three commitments in the Class of 2027 over the past few days.
Now, Penn State is set to host one of the nation’s top prospects.
Will Mencl, the Rivals No. 1 quarterback in the 2027 class out of Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona, has added Penn State to his upcoming visit schedule per Blue-White Illustrated. Auburn, Miami and Oregon are also on Mencl’s travel itinerary.
Mencl is the latest highly regarded quarterback to emerge from Chandler, one of Arizona’s premier high school football programs. Other notable signal-callers from the school include Dylan Raiola, Jacob Conover and Brett Hundley.
Penn State also has some natural ties to the Grand Canyon State.
Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser is from Arizona, which has helped him connect with Mencl and his family. Quarterbacks coach Jake Waters also has built a strong relationship not only with Mencl, but with Chandler head coach Ty Wisdom as well.
Mencl is a mobile quarterback with a prototypical frame, a live arm and a skill set that took a major step forward during his junior season in Arizona. He has shown the ability to make a wide range of throws both in and out of structure, operating efficiently in the quick perimeter game while also standing tall in the pocket and working through progressions to identify coverage breakdowns.
Mencl can generate impressive velocity when needed, but also shows touch on deeper passes. He is crafty under pressure and can move the chains as a runner thanks to his strength, vision and overall athleticism, which also makes him a fit for RPO concepts.
Mencl is believed to be around 6-foot-3, 200 pounds with nearly 10-inch hands. At this stage, he should be viewed as an ascending signal-caller with considerable developmental upside and the traits to project as a future Power Four starter.
