A young Penn State defensive back is entering the transfer portal after one season with the program.
Braz Thomas, a 6-foot-2, 203-pound safety from Glassboro, New Jersey, will be entering the portal per Tyler Calvaruso of Lions247.
Thomas didn’t receive any playing time during his lone season at PSU and thus will have four years of eligibility left.
After the team’s Pinstripe Bowl win over Clemson Dec. 27, Thomas and receiver Tyseer Denmark were seen leaving the field while the rest of the team was celebrating. The reasons for this remain undisclosed.
Thomas was recruited by PSU safeties coach Anthony Poindexter, who’s future is unclear with Matt Campbell now being the head coach and Penn State hiring Deon Broomfield to coach the DBs.
Thomas came to PSU after a standout career at Pleasantville High School in Glasssboro, New Jersey.
Penn State offered Thomas in March 2023. He also went on official visits to West Virginia (June 6-8) and Nebraska (June 14-16). Along with those three schools, he had offers from Georgia, Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Tennessee and UConn. Thomas had made several visits to Penn State, including attending both of the team’s home night games in 2023— against West Virginia to open the season and against Iowa three weeks later for the “White Out” game.
A four-star recruit, Thomas played receiver in high school but will start his college career at safety.
“They started recruiting me a year-and-a-half ago and I went to their camp and I wasn’t as polished,” Thomas told 247Sports during his recruitment. “My agility workouts weren’t the best and they told me straight up; you are going to have to get it. Next year come get it and that was that.”
15 Penn State players now plan to enter the transfer portal. The portal officially opens Jan. 2 and runs through Jan. 16.
