Penn State All-105: Zion Tracy Leading By Example

This is one in a series of stories breaking down each player on Penn State football’s 2026 roster.

They often say you never get a second chance to make a great first impression.

Penn State defensive back Zion Tracy has maximized his first impression on new head coach Matt Campbell and embodied a maxim every player should follow.

“I think Zion Tracy is one of the best football players that maybe I’ve coached, to be quite honest with you, in terms of talent, ability,” Campbell said this spring.

In an era of specialization, wide receivers are often defined as X, Z or slot targets. That level of specialization has also reached the defensive backfield, where Tracy has embraced the nickelback role, primarily covering opposing slot receivers.

Before Penn State: Tracy was rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals, and a four-star by On3, which ranked him as the top prospect in Connecticut in his class.

As a senior at St. Thomas More, Tracy recorded more than 500 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns while also intercepting three passes as a defensive back.

2025

Tracy’s 2025 season showed both growth and volatility in an expanded role for Penn State.

He logged 435 total snaps, including 245 in coverage, and finished with a 63.7 overall defensive grade, a 69.1 run-defense grade and a 61.1 coverage grade, according to Pro Football Focus.

Tracy was targeted 37 times, allowing 26 receptions for 228 yards, but he limited the damage to 8.8 yards per reception and produced one pass breakup.

His biggest issue was tackling consistency. Tracy posted a 55.1 tackling grade with nine missed tackles and a 20.9% missed tackle rate.

Still, there were encouraging flashes. He had strong performances against Villanova, Michigan State and Clemson, and he posted his highest single-game coverage grade of the season, an 81.2, against Oregon. Tracy was also used regularly in the slot, giving Penn State a developing defensive back with meaningful experience heading into 2026.

2024

In 2024, Zion Tracy began carving out a larger role in Penn State’s secondary, logging 390 total snaps, including 218 in coverage, while finishing with a 62.9 overall defensive grade and a 66.4 coverage grade, according to PFF.

He was targeted 39 times, allowing 25 receptions for 231 yards, but he also flashed playmaking ability with two interceptions, including his signature moment of the season: a pick-six against Ohio State and logging an interception against Boise State in the CFP Semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl.

That play showed Tracy’s instincts and ability to turn coverage into points, even as his season also revealed areas for improvement.

His tackling was the biggest concern, as he posted a 27.3 tackling grade with 15 missed tackles and a 39.5% missed tackle rate. Still, Tracy’s 2024 season gave Penn State a glimpse of his upside as a slot defender and defensive back capable of producing game-changing plays.

2023

In 2023, Zion Tracy worked in a limited but promising role during his first season of meaningful action for Penn State.

He played 148 total snaps, including 81 in coverage, and finished with a 65.3 overall defensive grade, a 69.5 run-defense grade and a 63.5 coverage grade, according to PFF.

Tracy was targeted just six times, allowing four receptions for 59 yards, with most of that damage coming in the Peach Bowl against Ole Miss.

He showed encouraging tackling efficiency, posting a 71.6 tackling grade with only one missed tackle and an 8.3% missed tackle rate. While his role was still developing, Tracy’s 2023 season gave Penn State an early look at his versatility and comfort in coverage before his workload expanded significantly over the next two seasons.

Where He Stands

Tracy has lined up as the nickelback against opposing slot receivers on 71% of his snaps between the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

At this point in his Penn State career, it is hard to imagine Campbell or new defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn shifting Tracy away from that role. What Campbell likely hopes is that Tracy can continue developing into a steady veteran presence while also mentoring transfers Omarion Davis from Boston College and Ibn McDaniels from Syracuse.

A Quote By Tracy

“I’ve been more vocal with the team, just trying to raise everybody,” Tracy said during spring practice. “If someone feels like they having a bad day, I’ll speak, everyone can hear me, get that energy up type of thing.”

A Quote About Tracy

“I think Zion can be one of the best corners in the country,” head coach Matt Campbell said. “I think he can be one of the best safeties in the country. He can play nickel. He can do a lot.”
