What Would Becoming Penn State’s Rushing King Mean to Nick Singleton?

Could Nicholas Singleton make history for Penn State this season?

Nick Singleton has a chance to end his Penn State career with more rushing yards than anybody else in program history.

No. 10 enters year four 1,021 yards away from Evan Royster’s record, and, yeah, it’s kind of a big deal.

Considering the backs that have come through Happy Valley— Saquon Barkley, Curt Warner, DJ Dozier, Ki-Jana Carter, just to name a few— Singleton having that record would be a huge achievement.

Singleton rushed for 1,099 yards last season, and did so while battling injuries throughout the season.

So it seems that the only things that could stop Singleton from breaking the record would be his health and, ironically, one of his teammates.

Kaytron Allen, who broke in with Singleton in the Class of 2022, is only 35 yards behind Singleton.

Nick Singleton talked about what breaking that record would mean, as well as what going through this process with Allen adds to the experience, with reporters on Zoom late Wednesday morning.

WHAT SINGLETON SAID

Penn State RB Nick Singleton has a chance to make history.

“It would mean a lot for me to be able to meet that goal and be the leading rusher at Penn State. That’s something to talk about, everybody talks about (it) for, like, forever. Obviously, Kaytron, he’s working at that goal, too. So it’s good to compete, but at the same time, we’re happy for each other. We always look out for each other. For one of us to get our goal, it’s going to be really good.”

‘FAT MAN’ IS… LOSING FAT

Penn State RB Kaytron “Fatman” Allen just might be in the best shape of his life.

Coach James Franklin has talked plenty over the offseason about how Allen— nicknamed “Fatman”— has finally had a healthy summer.

”Fatman” isn’t actually fat at all.

“Kaytron’s been looking good,” Singleton said. “Really fast. Everybody said he lost a little baby weight. Obviously, you could tell, too. He’s more explosive. Fast, strong too.”

Singleton also mentioned that Allen went about his business differently this summer.

“Throughout the whole summer, he took a different approach,” Singleton said. “His mindset was really locked in throughout the whole summer. Just working on stuff he needs to work on. But he’s been really good. He’s one of the leaders on this team, too. So he’s going to do good things here.”

The race for the record begins Saturday at 3:30 against Nevada in Beaver Stadium on CBS.
