In Penn State wrestling news, a PSU wrestler has decided to enter the transfer portal.
On3’s Pete Nakos reported Monday morning that Lucas Cochran has decided to enter the portal after five seasons with Penn State.
There’s a chance that Cochran’s college wrestling career is already over.
To get another year of eligibility, he would have to apply for a medical redshirt retroactive to the 2025-26 season, where he didn’t wrestle in any competitions.
When Cochran did wrestle at Penn State, he usually did the job, going 36-8 over five seasons.
The most notable win came in February 2024 at the Bryce Jordan Center against Rutgers.
With Penn State’s regular heavyweight, Greg Kerkvliet, out with an illness, Cochran, who had been competing at 197, moved up to wrestle a top 10 heavyweight in Rutgers’ Yaraslau Slavikouski. Not only did Cochran hold his own, he won, beating Slavinkouski 7-3 to close out the dual meet.
Cochran continued to compete at 197 the next season and went 4-0 with a 100% bonus rate.
The next year, he moved up to heavyweight, where he competed for the starting spot with Kerkvliet being out of eligibility. Cole Mirasola ended up starting for Penn State, and Cochran didn’t wrestle any bouts during the season.
With Cael Sanderson’s wrestling empire having won 13 of the past 15 national titles— including the last five, which Cochran was a part of— talented wrestlers have been blocked from the starting lineup, and Cochran was one of them.
In the past two years, Terrell Barraclough and David Evans each became All-Americans after transferring from Penn State to Utah Valley.
The transfer portal closes April 30. Evans is the first Penn State wrestler to enter.
