Penn State Wrestling: Luke Lilledahl’s Statement Win Over Spencer Lee Highlights U.S. Open

Penn State wrestling star Luke Lilledahl delivered one the biggest win of his young freestyle career, scoring two points at the buzzer to defeat Olympic Silver Medalist Spencer Lee 5-4 and secure gold in the 57-kilogram Senior Men’s Freestyle title at the 2026 U.S. Open.

Lilledahl went 4-0 on the weekend, including two technical falls, but his championship bout was the defining moment. Lee, a former Iowa star, Hodge Trophy winner and 2024 Olympic Silver Medalist, had beaten Lilledahl in their two previous meetings, first at the 2023 Bill Farrell Memorial International and again at 2025 Final X.

This time, Lilledahl flipped the result.

Lee built the early edge in a tactical match that featured multiple passivity calls and limited scoring opportunities. Lilledahl stayed within striking distance and trailed late before finding the winning sequence in the closing seconds. His two-point score at the buzzer gave him the 5-4 victory and the U.S. Open title.

Lilledahl’s win is another major statement for the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and Penn State’s freestyle pipeline, as he knocked off one of the most accomplished American lightweights of the last decade.

Marcus Blaze also captured gold for the NLWC, defeating Ohio State’s Ben Davino 4-1 in the 61-kilogram final.

The matchup carried a familiar storyline. Davino had gotten the better of Blaze in folkstyle competition, including a tiebreaker win at the Big Ten Championships, but many wrestling observers have viewed Blaze as the more polished freestyle wrestler. That dynamic played out in Las Vegas.

Blaze controlled the pace and positioning of the bout, turning a tight match into a championship win with late scoring. After a series of passivity calls shaped the early action, Blaze added key points in the second period, including a two-point score with 29 seconds remaining to secure the 4-1 decision.

With their U.S. Open titles, Lilledahl and Blaze now move on to Final X, scheduled for June 19, where they will compete for spots on Team USA.
