Drew Allar: What James Franklin Said About the Penn State QB’s Status

Penn State QB Drew Allar may or may not play against Ohio State Saturday.

Penn State football’s starting quarterback, Drew Allar, left Saturday’s game at Wisconsin with an injury, and naturally, coach James Franklin was asked about it two days later during his weekly press conference.

Just as naturally, Franklin didn’t say much.

As expected, we don’t yet know what Allar’s status is for Saturday’s showdown against Ohio State and Franklin doesn’t expect a final decision to be made until game time.

“I think Drew has played enough football to where it will be up until game time before we make that decision,” Franklin said.

Although Beau Pribula (11-for-13, 98 yards, one TD) played well in relief of Allar, helping Penn State to a 28-13 win, Penn State would obviously prefer to have Allar healthy. Ohio State, as usual, is the biggest game of the regular season, and this one is a top-five clash.

THE INJURY

Before exiting Penn State’s win over Wisconsin Saturday, Oct. 26, QB Drew Allar was 14 of 18 for 148 yards and a touchdown

Allar was playing one of the best games of his college career before he got hurt. In the first half, Allar completed 14 of 18 passes for 148 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. This follows up Allar’s performance at USC, in which he threw for a career-high 391 yards in a 33-30 overtime win. Allar is playing some of the best football of his life, and as impressive as Pribula was at Wisconsin, Allar playing Saturday would go a long way toward Penn State beating its boogeyman in Ohio State.

A SHOT AT REDEMPTION

Allar, a Medina, Ohio, native, played one of the worst games of his college football career last season in Columbus, completing 18 of 42 passes in Penn State’s 20-12 loss. He’s been waiting for more than a year to fully redeem himself, and will only get that chance if he’s able to play against Ohio State.

The game is scheduled for noon on Fox.
