Penn State has had plenty of quality cornerbacks over the years, and it will probably be a while before Joshua Johnson gets his shot.
Johnson, a true freshman from Ironton, Ohio, has plenty of people ahead of him on the depth chart.
A.J. Harris has the potential to be a first-round pick.
Elliot Washington is a veteran who just had one of the best winter workout seasons maybe in history. Audavion Collins is entering his fourth college football season and is a player Penn State’s coaching staff is high on.
But even if Johnson doesn’t get much playing time, he still has a chance to make a first impression.
Height: 6-foot-2
Weight: 192 pounds
Hometown: Ironton, Ohio
Before Penn State: Johnson came to Penn State after a standout career at Ironton High School. The team went 50-6 over his four seasons. As a senior, Johnson picked up 51 tackles, two interceptions, a pick six and 11 pass breakups. The year before that, he had 64 tackles and ran two of his four interceptions back for touchdowns. A three-star, Johnson committed to Penn State in October, picking PSU over Louisville among others.
Where he stands: Where Johnson can be most useful— barring something unforeseen— is on the practice field. Here, he can impress his older teammates as well as James Franklin and the rest of the coaching staff.
A quote by Johnson: “Really, going back to the beginning, when they first started recruiting me, they were trying to build a different kind of relationship with me. They took their time through every aspect of this whole process. They really built our relationship all around family. Now, seeing how they’ve stayed on me and continued to stress that family atmosphere and what it can do for me, I do believe that’s the best place for me.” — Johnson on Penn State, via On3Sports
