Former Penn State WR Chris Godwin is staying with the team that drafted him.
On this, the first day of NFL Free Agency, Godwin signed a three-year, $66 million dollar deal to stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This could well mean that Godwin, 29, will be a Buc for life.
Heโs already established himself as one of the best receivers to play for Tampa, as evidenced by the fact that heโs second on the teamโs all-time receiving list. Godwin was an All-Pro for the Bucs in 2019 and helped the team win a Super Bowl the next season. Despite all this, there was a time when it didnโt look like Godwin would be retiring to TB.
THE INJURY
A big reason Godwinโs future was so uncertain was because of the injury that ended his 2024 season early.
Heโs coming off a dislocated ankle that cut his season short after Week 7, and thatโs something GM Jason Licht knew the Bucs must consider.
Licht went on to say that Godwin โmeans the worldโ to the Buccaneers.
โNobody has been more resilient than him,โ he said. โWeโve been down this road before, a similar path. So nobodyโs been more resilient and works harder than him. So, those are the good things, and if I were a betting man, I would bet on Chris.Still, facts are, we have to wade through some variables.โ
As successful as Godwin has been in the NFL, Penn State fans, of course, will remember him for what he did in college.
GODWIN AT PENN STATE
Godwin was one of the first Penn State stars in the James Franklin era.
At Penn State, heโs sixth on the all-time list and is best known for his role on the 2016 Big Ten title team, where he had 982 yards and 11 touchdowns on 59 catches.
