One of Penn State football’s best players made fun of Maryland following PSU’s 44-7 demolition of the Terps at Beaver Stadium Saturday.
About three hours after the game ended, DE Dani Dennis-Sutton took to social media.
“What happened to the whole “You were, We are” thing?” Dennis-Sutton posted.
What happened to the whole “You were, We are” thing?

Most PSU fans should know exactly what Dennis-Sutton— who had three tackles and a sack against the Terps— is talking about. For those that don’t, here’s a refresher. When Maryland pounded PSU 35-19 in the pandemic-themed 2020 season, the school’s social media team made a now infamous graphic.

“Sad valley” wasn’t a real place Saturday afternoon. Not only did Penn State destroy Maryland, but thanks to Ohio State losing to Michigan, Penn State will now be playing Oregon in the Big Ten championship next Saturday.
EVER SINCE THAT POST…
PSU and Maryland have played four times since that tweet. Penn State has won each game, by scores of 33-14, 30-0, 51-15 and 44-7. That’s a combined 158-36 and an average margin of victory of 30.5. This is pretty much how the “rivalry” between the two schools has gone overall. In the 11 meetings the two teams have had since Maryland joined the Big Ten before the 2014 season, Penn State has won nine overall. Dating back even further, Penn State is 44-3-1 overall.
Maryland’s only wins over Penn State came in 1961, before Joe Paterno was the coach, 2014, when Franklin was in his first year and the program still had to deal with NCAA sanctions, and 2020, when there was a once-in-a-lifetime global health crisis.
SUTTON’S MARYLAND CONNECTION
Dennis-Sutton, who’s from Millsboro, Delaware, played his high school football at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland. At the time Maryland last beat PSU, he was a high school junior. He ended up becoming a five-star talent who signed with PSU in December 2021.
PSU takes on Oregon Saturday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. in Indianapolis on Fox.
