Less than a week before the early signing period begins, Penn State has lost a Class of 2025 commitment to Florida.

Early Friday afternoon, Jayden Woods told Hayes Fawcett of On3Sports that he had flipped his commitment.

Woods, a 6-foot-3, 240-pounder from Milli Valley High School in Shawnee, Kansas, announced his commitment to Penn State June 19. He also had offers from schools such as Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Cincinnati, Duke, Iowa, Iowa State, Illinois, Kansas, Kansas State, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Purdue, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, ย Tennessee, USC, Washington and Wisconsin.

WHAT TYPE OF PLAYER IS WOODS?

In a scouting report for 247Sports, Gabe Brooks described Woods as a โ€œgood-sized standing edge player with the physical tools to put a hand on the ground, whether as a scheme-versatile puzzle piece or as a long-term projection to a more traditional D-line role.โ€

โ€œPlays with obvious strength at the point of attack. Puts hands to use and shows stack-and-shed ability vs. the run. Displays encouraging linear pursuit speed to close on the ball. Physical tackler who shows some quick uncoiling pop that also punishes lead blockers in the run game. Excellent multi-sport profile that includes Kansas state discus championship and wrestling prowess. Bit of a one-speed rusher who’s still developing his move set. Flashes an effective inside move. Segmented mover at times with some lower-half tightness when redirecting. Can improve dip-and-bend flexibility around the edge and present more of a speed threat on obvious passing downs. Projects as a high-major defender who may wind up more of an interior defensive lineman than a true edge. Thrives on functional strength and high-effort, energetic play style. Could become an impact starter with long-term NFL Draft upside.

THE GOOD NEWS FOR PENN STATE

Penn State defensive line coach Deion Barnes spoke highly of true freshman DE Max Granville on a Zoom call Thursday

While losing Woods stings for Penn State, it still has four players committed to its Class of 2025 at the EDGE position alone: Four-stars Lavar Arrington II, Dayshaun Burnett, Cortez Harris and Chaz Coleman. Penn State also has Max Granville at that position, who was supposed to be in the 2025 Class but reclassified and as a result is with the current Penn State team.

Penn State is scheduled to take on Maryland Saturday in its regular-season finale at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 on the Big Ten Network.
