MADISON, WI— The Big Ten’s weekly availability report is out, and Penn State will be without one of its running backs against Wisconsin.
Quinton Martin Jr., a true freshman who is Penn State’s third-string running back behind Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, will not play Saturday night.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that, after some uncertainty, starter Singleton will play. Singleton missed The team’s 27-11 win over UCLA Oct. 5 but did play against USC the next week. When Singleton is at his best, there aren’t many in college football that are better. Through five games, he has 434 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 6.9 yards per carry.
WHO IS THE NEW RB3?
With Martin out against Wisconsin, another true freshman, Corey Smith, is in as Penn State’s third string tailback. Smith, a 5-foot-10, 189 pounder, is from Milwaukee, so this could be an interesting experience for him. But realistically, Penn State would prefer to keep its carries to Singleton and Allen. For one, if those two are healthy, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be getting the ball. For another, Smith is likely a player coach James Franklin and company would prefer to redshirt. Franklin confirmed in his weekly press conference this Monday that Monday that the team still plans on redshirting Martin, as well.
