Transfer Portal: Former Penn State Guard Kanye Clary Finds new Home

Penn State athletics

A player who had a brief but exciting tenure as a Penn State basketball star has found a home out of the transfer portal.

Kanye Clary will be transferring to Mississippi State, he announced Friday afternoon.

Clary was at Penn State for almost two full seasons, starting his college career with Micah Shrewsberry then playing his second season under first-year coach Mike Rhoades.

In Year 1, Clary was a role player on a team that made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a dozen years and won its first tournament game since 2001. He ended that season averaging 3.7 PPG. With star point guard Jalen Pickett out of eligibility, the door opened up for Clary to become a star in Year 2, and Clary ran through it, becoming one of the top scorers in the Big Ten. But on the last Saturday of January, Clary suffered an injury that led to him missing two games. Clary returned less than two weeks after his injury, but came off the bench in games against Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan State.

When Clary didn’t make the trip for a road game against Nebraska Feb. 17, Penn State fans started to wonder what his future with the program was.

They didn’t wonder for long.

Two days after the Nebraska game, Rhoades announced during his weekly press conference that Clary had been dismissed.

The last and most productive season of Clary’s Penn State career ended with him averaging 16.7 points per game before his dismissal and entry into the transfer portal. Now, he’ll be staying in the Power Five and joining a Mississippi State team that made it to the tournament this past season.
