Penn State basketball’s leading scorer is no longer with the team.
Coach Mike Rhoades told media at his weekly press conference Monday afternoon inside the Bryce Jordan Center that Kanye Clary is not a part of the program anymore and said it was a “coach’s decision.”
Clary’s been Penn State’s best offensive player for most of this season, but it’s been a while since PSU and its fans saw him at his best. Clary got hurt in the team’s loss against Minnesota on the last Saturday of January and missed the team’s next two games.
He played against Iowa, Northwestern and Michigan State, but came off the bench in each game and never scored more than eight points.
When the team traveled to Nebraska for Saturday’s loss, Clary wasn’t there.
If this is the end of Clary’s time at Penn State, it will be a shame. He progressed from a bench player on Penn State’s NCAA Tournament team last season to one of the Big Ten’s top scorers, forming a formidable backcourt with Ace Baldwin. The thought of Penn State finishing this season without Clary would he been looked at as crazy not too long ago, but now, it’s all too realistic. Penn State’s next game is in Rec Hall Wednesday night against Illinois.
Clary started 20 of Penn State’s first 23 games, averaging 16.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists.
Penn State’s lost three straight games, two of which by double digits. It has a big week ahead, with a game against Indiana Saturday following the Illinois game. Without Clary, D’Marco Dunn’s increased role will continue.
