At 6-foot-4, Malick Meiga, a sophomore WR from Cegep du Vieux in St. Jerome, Quebec, is the tallest wide receiver on the Penn State football roster.
Last season—his first in college football— Meiga caught three passes for 78 yards and a touchdown.
This year, in a crowded receivers room, he looks to play a larger role in the offense while also contributing on special teams.
At Penn State’s media day Saturday, Meiga spoke to Nittany Sports Now and discussed special teams, finding his niche in the offense and growing up playing in Canada.
Right now, Meiga is working towards becoming a consistent contributor to coordinator Mike Yurcich’s offense.Â
“I feel that we work toward that every day in practice,” Meiga said. “I respect everybody in that room, and everybody has to be ready what they get a chance to play, and when the time comes, everybody will be ready to play.”
Meiga takes pride in his role as a gunner on special teams, and first-year coordinator Stacy Collins mentioned him as a contributor in his press conference Saturday.
“It is something that I take great pride in,” Meiga said. “We spend a lot of time on special teams here at Penn State, and I feel that is something you have to do to be on offense and defense.”
Meiga grew up playing football in Canada, and the game is not the same in the United States.
“It is a big difference,” Meiga said. “Not everybody is as good, the field is bigger and the goal post is in front of the end zone. Playing amateur football in Canada, then stepping into Division I college football is a big step.”
