Penn State didn’t have its top two receivers against Purdue Saturday, and could again be without a pair of receivers this week against Washington.
Per the Big Ten’s Wednesday avalability report, Zay Robinson is questionable.
Koby Howard, who had two 100 yard games in Penn State’s first three contests before suffering an injury against Buffalo that has sidlined him for the last five games, is also listed as questionable, and coach Matt Campbell said Wednesday that Howard had been “very limited” in practice leading into Washington.
Penn State’s leading receiver, Chase Sowell, was also out for Purdue, but is listed as probable for the Washington game, as are starting left tackle Malachi Goodman and key defensive tackle Armstrong Nnodim. Robinson, a redshirt freshman who transfered from Iowa State, where Campbell had been the coach, is impactful in ways that go beyond the receiving game. He is also Penn State’s No. 1 return man and is fourth in the Big Ten in punt return yards with 196.
In the receiving game, Robinson has nine catches for 129 yards and a touchdown, which was on a 39-yard reception in Robinson’s Penn State debut against Marshall. He also caught a 22-yard pass against Temple, a 19-yarder against Northwestern and an 18-yarder against USC, so he can create big plays.
When talking about Robinson ahead of the Purdue game, Sowell, who also transferred from Iowa State, got candid.
“I actually told him when I first got to Iowa State, I didn’t like him a lot,” he said. “He would talk a lot and tell us that he’s gonna do this, do that and he’d go out there and do it … don’t judge the book by its cover.”
Penn State and Washington are scheduled to kick off at 3:30 EST on FS1 from Seattle.
