Penn State Basketball: Nittany Lions Hang On To Close Out Chattanooga

Tonight, 0-1 Chattanooga visited 1-0 Penn State for each team’s second regular season game of the 2026-2027 season.

To start the game, PSU’s, Thomas Allard knocked in eight straight points and was 3-for-4 as a team from beyond the arc, but at the first media timeout (15:52) the score was all tied at 11-11. Chattanooga was shooting 75% from three as well.

Francois Wibaut broke the tie with an and-1 drive to the hoop and a made three to put the Nittany Lions back up 17-11 (14:02).

Penn State was outrebounding the Mocs 10-2 and at the second media timeout (10:50) PSU was up on the Mocs, 23-18. Allard had eight points for the Blue & White, Wibaut 6 and Dasonte Bowen 5.

At the 8:28 mark, the Nittany Lions had their largest lead of the game at ten points, 30-20. Penn State was out-hustling the Mocs and were quicker to the ball both offensively and defensively.

With 5:56 left before the half, Penn State was shooting 59% from the field and were up 40-24.

The bigger and more physical Nittany Lions were drawing fouls and capitalizing at the foul line by shooting 13-for-14 from the charity stripe and with 3:37 left before the half, it was Penn State 46 Chattanooga 24.

At the Half:  Penn State 54 Chattanooga 31.  The Nittany Lions shot 50% from the field, 21-for-22 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Mocs 22 to 11. Josh Reed led the way with 11 points.

To begin the second half, Chattanooga came out with a purpose. They scored the first eight points of the half, but then Wibaut broke PSU’s scoring drought with a 10-footer.

At the 15:50 mark it was Penn State over Chattanooga 58-42.

The Mocs kept battling and had their deficit to only 13 points with 14:30 remaining in the game.

At the first media timeout (12:00) of the second half, it was Penn State hanging onto their lead 66-54. Chattanooga found their stride and Penn State was trying to find the rhythm they had in the first half.

Since the Nittany Lions were cold from the floor, they were either attacking the hoop or feeding the ball inside to Ivan Juric. This recipe was working because they were drawing fouls and knocking in their free throws.

Chattanooga was not going away though. With 7:16 left in regulation, it was Penn State up by 10 points, 78-68.

Juric kept getting good positioning inside and was getting good looks at the rim and with 5:14 to play it was the Nittany Lions 81 Mocs 72.

With 1:36 to play, Chattanooga kept chipping away at the lead and Penn State was only leading 89-83.

But the Nittany Lions hung on for the 97-93 victory and improve to 2-0.
