Penn State wrestling great Roman Bravo-Young is a world medalist.
RBY, competing for Mexico, made it all the way to the championship round, where he took on USA’s Spencer Lee, an Iowa legend and reigning Olympic Silver Medalist.
Lee took gold with a 10-0 tech fall in 25 seconds.
RBY started his tournament with a 5-2 win over Kazakhstan’s Meirambek Kartbay. Next up was Mauritius’ John Leopold, who he dispatched 10-0 in 2:14. The next two matches were tougher.
He took on Munkh Batkhuyag of Mongolia and won 4-3. Next up was North Korea’s Chong Song Han, and RBY won that one, 4-1, to make it to the finals. After college, RBY made it to the 2024 Olympic Team, representing Mexico. After that, he left Nittany Lion Wrestling Club to join Oklahoma State’s Cowboy RTC, with Penn State wrestling great David Taylor now leading the charge.
RBY returned to NLWC last November and opened a training facility in his new town.
Bravo-Young is from Tucson, Arizona. He came to Penn State in the Fall of 2018 and immediately became a factor, becoming an All-American as a true freshman. He would repeat that feat three more times, twice winning a national championship and the third time, making it to the championship match.
After his college career ended, Bravo-Young hit the freestyle circuit, competing for Mexico.
He’s won four Gold Medals for the Mexican Grand Prix and won a Pan American Championship at Monterrey in 2025, all at 57 KG.
All in all, the six NLWC members who competed at Worlds won medals.
That’s pretty good.
