Penn State dropped out of one major top 25 poll last week, and now, Penn State is out of the rankings entirely.
A 34-13 loss to Northwestern bounced PSU from No. 22 in the Coaches Poll to unranked.
Penn State Ran Over in Northwestern’s New Stadium Debut, Drops Big Ten Road Opener
This isn’t a surprise, and it’s something that Penn State fans have grown too familiar with over the past year.
Penn State’s 2025 loss to Northwestern knocked it out of the polls and ended James Franklin’s PSU career. Penn State never returned for the last six weeks of the regular season plus the postseason. Under new coach Matt Campbell, Penn State started the year ranked No. 17 in the Coaches Poll and No. 18 in the AP, and moved all the way up to No. 13 in the AP before a crushing loss to Wisconsin at home knocked it out of that poll.
Penn State was still ranked in the Coaches Poll, and a win at Northwestern would have put PSU back in the top 20 and back in the AP entirely.
But it wasn’t to be, and now, Penn State must do what it can to get back in the rankings.
If Penn State can win its next two games: at home against No. 17 USC and on the road at Michigan, there’s a good chance it will return to the top 25 in at least one of the rankings.
But the vibes are low right now amongst Nittany Nation, and will continue to be unless Penn State can right the ship.
