Penn State’s 2027 recruiting class took another hit Sunday as, per 247Sports, three-star linebacker Blake Betton flipped his commitment from the Nittany Lions to Big Ten rival Wisconsin.
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect from Shakopee, Minnesota, had been committed to Penn State since April 11, but ultimately elected to stay closer to home and join Luke Fickell’s Badgers.
Betton’s departure is another setback for Penn State head coach Matt Campbell, who made the linebacker one of his early recruiting priorities after arriving in Happy Valley last December.
The two already had an established relationship from Campbell’s time at Iowa State, helping Penn State secure Betton’s commitment earlier this year.
According to the Rivals Industry Rankings, Betton is the No. 40 linebacker nationally and No. 4 prospect in Minnesota. Rivals independently rates him as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 27 linebacker, while 247Sports gives him an 88 rating.
Betton recorded 88 tackles, including four for loss, two interceptions, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery during his junior season at Shakopee.
His versatility made him an intriguing addition to Penn State’s future linebacker room, with the ability to play multiple positions.
Betton visited Penn State earlier this month for the Nittany Lions’ White Out loss to USC but continued drawing interest from several Midwest programs.
His decision leaves Oklahoma native Case Alexander as Penn State’s lone linebacker commitment in the 2027 class.
Betton becomes the second Penn State prospect to flip commitments in recent days, joining quarterback Will Wood, who switched his pledge to Boston College.
