Penn State’s “White Out” is considered one of college football’s greatest spectacles but struggles on the field are beginning to show up in the secondary ticket market even for a game of significant magnitude.
According to StubHub, ticket prices for Penn State’s upcoming White Out matchup against USC have fallen 61 percent over the past week. Resale prices are also roughly half of what they were an hour before kickoff of Friday night’s game against Northwestern.
It is a stunning shift for what entered the season as one of the most anticipated games on Penn State’s schedule.
But after Northwestern handed Penn State a 34-13 loss Friday night, enthusiasm surrounding the program has understandably taken a hit.
Penn State has reached an early crossroads under head coach Matt Campbell.
A season that began with expectations of competing near the top of the Big Ten has quickly turned into a fight to stabilize the program. Friday’s loss was particularly alarming because Northwestern controlled the line of scrimmage, rushing for 413 yards while holding Penn State to just 48.
Last season, the secondary market ticket prices for the Oregon White Out game started around $330 to $400 for get-in prices and reached as high as $1,230 to $2,082 for premium lower-level seats.
The White Out traditionally creates one of college football’s most recognizable atmospheres.
This time, however, Penn State needs more than a spectacle it needs a response.
A win against USC could provide some badly needed momentum and restore confidence.
Another loss could send Penn State, and the perception surrounding Campbell’s first season, further in the wrong direction.
