Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley is departing the Nittany Lions’ coaching staff for an NFL opportunity, continuing the personnel reshuffling within the program as it approaches spring practices next month.
Daniel Gallen of 247Sports first reported that McSorley, who had been serving as an assistant to quarterbacks coach Jake Waters under new head coach Matt Campbell, is leaving to join the Buffalo Bills as an offensive assistant.
The move reunites McSorley with Buffalo’s new head coach Joe Brady, who previously spent two seasons at Penn State as a graduate assistant in 2015 and 2016. Brady, elevated from offensive coordinator to head coach this offseason, has begun assembling his staff and identified McSorley as a valuable addition given his familiarity with high-level quarterback play and offensive systems.
McSorley’s departure comes just weeks after Campbell addressed his status following the coaching transition. McSorley had served as a bridge across multiple leadership changes, remaining with the program through the shift from James Franklin to Terry Smith and ultimately to Campbell.
Campbell previously praised the former Nittany Lions star for the perspective and energy he brought to the staff during a pivotal period of change.
McSorley left the program as its all time leader in passing yards (9,899), that was eclipsed by his successor Sean Clifford and maintains the record for touchdowns responsible for (107)
McSorley still has single season marks for completions, passing yards, total offense, and passing touchdowns.
With spring practice looming, Penn State must now adjust once again as Campbell continues shaping his inaugural staff, while McSorley takes the next step in his coaching career at the professional level.
