The Penn State men’s basketball team looked to get an upset, on the road today in Lincoln against the #9 Cornhuskers.
At the first media timeout (14:55) it was the Cornhuskers who maintained an edge over the Nittany Lions by a score of 13-9. Penn State’s, Josh Reed, had five of the Nittany Lions’ nine points. Nebraska’s leading scorer, Pryce Sandfort, was leading all scorers with 10 points shooting 3-of-3 from downtown.
Nebraska had an edge shooting, hitting 50% from the field, compared to PSU’s 31%, the score at the (11:59) mark was 17-9. The Cornhuskers were shooting a blistering 57% from three-point range.
Penn State’s, Dominick Stewart, then ended a near seven-minute scoring drought for the Nittany Lions with a made jumper and with (7:46) left in the half it was Nebraska 22 PSU 11.
Nebraska then started to struggle from the floor .
With (4:52) left in Period 1, they were now only shooting 38% from the field.
But then the Cornhusker’s, Leo Curtis, knocked in a jumper and Sandfort drilled his fourth three of the game to regain Nebraska’s momentum, which stretched their lead to 29-15 with (2:50) left in the half.
Nebraska was on a 9-0 run until Penn State’s, Sasa Ciani, hit two free throws.
Halftime Score: Nebraska 38 PSU 20.
Sandfort had 20 points for the home team shooting 6-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 from three.
Reed was leading the Blue & White with eight points.
To start Period 2, Penn State came out shooting well to trim the deficit to 13, 38-25 (18:14).
But Nebraska held steady and went on a 9-0 run and at the first media timeout (16:06) of the second half it was the Cornhuskers with their biggest lead of the game by a score of 47-25.
The team from Lincoln kept in high gear and with (11:45) to play it was Nebraska over Penn State, 59-35. Sandfort had 22 points for Big Red and teammate, Braden Frager, followed with 10 points.
Penn State did go on a 7-0 scoring run, but was only shooting 15% from downtown (2-of-13) and with (7:21) left in regulation it was the Cornhuskers 63 Nittany Lions 47.
With (4:00) to play it was Nebraska in full control of the game, 74-54. Both Sandfort and Frager were shooting 50% from three and had 27 points and 15 points, respectively.
Penn State’s, Ivan Juric, was leading the Nittany Lions with 13 points shooting 6-of-8 from the field. Josh Reed and Kayden Mingo followed with 11 points apiece (1:55).
