Penn State received another significant piece of positive offseason news Thursday evening, as freshman cornerback Daryus Dixson announced he will return for the 2026 season.
A four-star recruit from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, Dixson quickly emerged as one of the most impactful freshmen used by interim head coach Terry Smith during the 2025 campaign. Thrust into meaningful snaps early, Dixson played with a confidence and physicality that belied his age, becoming a steady presence in the Nittany Lions’ secondary.
New head coach Matt Campbell and incoming defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn now inherit one of the program’s most promising young defenders. Dixson’s decision to stay in Happy Valley is expected to have a major impact on the structure and ceiling of Penn State’s defense in 2026.
Following Penn State’s Pinstripe Bowl victory, Dixson addressed his future candidly. “I haven’t really thought about that,” he said. “As of right now, I’m a Penn Stater. I’m just going to work better on my craft with football and just let God handle the rest of anything else that happens.” When asked directly if he wanted to remain at Penn State under the new staff, Dixson answered simply, “Yeah, for sure.”
The numbers back up his importance. Dixson finished as Penn State’s sixth-highest graded defender by Pro Football Focus, earning a 75.8 overall defensive grade. His impact at the line of scrimmage was elite, posting a team-best 91.3 grade on pass rushing situations, while opposing quarterbacks completed just 55.6% of passes thrown his way.
With Dixson returning, Penn State retains a cornerstone piece of its defensive future.
