Penn State OC Andy Kotelnicki ‘Has Been Involved’ in UConn Head-Coaching Search

It seems like a pretty good bet that Andy Kotelnicki has coached his last regular-season game at Penn State, and the question now is what will be next for the OC.

Per a report by FootballScoop, there’s a chance that Kotelnicki is the next head coach at UConn.

To be clear, Kotelnicki would not be UConn’s first choice.

That would be Toledo coach Jason Candle, who, ironically enough, was a teammate of new Penn State boss Matt Campbell at Mt. Union, coached with Campbell at Mt. Union for two seasons and then succeeded him as offensive coordinator.

After that, Candle was Campbell’s offensive coordinator at Toledo for two seasons before succeeding him when Campbell left for the Iowa State job after the 2015 season.

Candle is 81-44 at Toledo, and is also in the mix to succeed new Florida coach Jon Sumrall at Tulane.

If Candle doesn’t end up in Storrs, FootballScoop reported that Kotelnicki, Lehigh head coach Kevin Cahill and UConn offensive coordinator Gordie Sammis have all been a part of the search.

Assuming this is the end of Kotelnicki’s time in Happy Valley either way, it will be remembered as a mixed bag, at best.

Penn State averaged 33 points per game in Kotelnicki’s first season, led by tight end Tyler Warren, who Kotelnicki helped become a Mackey Award winner.

But the next season, Warren was gone, and Penn State’s offense regressed dramatically, ending the regular season 89th out of 136 teams in total offense.

After Kotelnicki’s first season at Penn State, he was one of the top candidates for the West Virginia job.

Now, he appears to be a long shot for the UConn job.

Update: Andy Kotelnicki will not be the next coach at UConn.
