For many Penn State fans, expectations entering the early signing period of National Signing Day were modest. With uncertainty surrounding who would become the next head football coach, most anticipated that no players would sign their letters of intent.
But on a day short on good news, Penn State secured signatures from two four-star talents, offering a welcome boost to the program.
The first to sign was Malvern Prep defensive lineman Jackson Ford.
Ford, who spoke with Nittany Sports Now last week about his commitment, has long envisioned himself staying in Pennsylvania and representing the state’s flagship university.
“Penn State has had a big coaching change before (Franklin) and managed to get out of that,” Ford told 247Sports.
Ford emphasized that Penn State is a program “built on greatness” and one he believes will continue to uphold that standard moving forward.
While Ford’s signature was expected, and hoped for, Penn State received an unexpected signing from quarterback Peyton Falzone of Nazareth.
Falzone originally committed to Penn State in April. However, when the Nittany Lions added quarterback Troy Huhn; who later followed James Franklin to Virginia Tech, Falzone decommitted in June and quickly pledged to Auburn.
Following the firing of Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze, Falzone grew uncertain of his standing with new head coach Alex Golesh.
Many credit Penn State landing Falzone to interim head coach Terry Smith, who remained persistent in securing a quarterback in this recruiting cycle.
