A candidate who has gotten buzz in the Penn State coaching search spoke about his name being linked to other jobs, and his response wasn’t boring.
Brent Key is a Georgia Tech guy.
Now, that doesn’t mean he’ll be a Georgia Tech guy forever, but the current Georgia Tech coach also went to school there and, now, has turned around his alma mater to the point where his name is a hot one during what’s already one of the most eventful coaching searches in history (we still have almost a month left in the season).
Key is confirmed to be a candidate for the PSU job, and it was only a matter of time before he was asked about his name being linked to such openings.
WHAT KEY SAID
“Since I came back here, since I was named the head coach here, outside of the time with my family, every waking second of my life has gone towards building this program, to get to the point that it is right now,” Key said per Kelly Quinlan of Jackets Online.
“So that in turn we can continue three years from now, five years from now, 10 years from now, continue to elevate this place to be in that conversation. Not to be in there for two or three weeks, but to be a consistent team, not when you lose one game, have people say the storybook is over. Nah, it’s just the beginning. Slice me open and see what colors I bleed.”
WOULD KEY BE A FIT?
Based on what Key said, it doesn’t sound like he’s looking to leave Georgia Tech (although it must be said that he never said “I’m not leaving Georgia Tech”).
But if he was interested in Penn State, should Penn State be interested in him?
Key took over Georgia Tech midway through the 2022 season, leading a ship that had just gone through three straight three-win seasons.
Georgia Tech had winning seasons in Key’s first two full years and, this year, entered November unbeaten and is right in the thick of the ACC race.
GT just had a bad loss to NC State, and a bad end to the season would cool Key’s name off the hot boards. But there’s a lot to like about Key as part of the Penn State coaching search.
