The concept of Penn State upsetting Indiana has always made sense… if we’re talking about basketball.
One of the most bitter losses in Penn State history took place against Indiana in 1993, when it came in as a heavy underdog and almost shocked the country.
Now, the football team is the one that has to shock the country against Indiana, and that’s not something anybody is used to.
Even going into this season, when it was clear that Curt Cignetti had built something in Bloomington, Penn State was supposed to be the better team.
Instead, Penn State is 3-5 and without a full-time head coach, and Indiana is 9-0 and ranked No. 2.
WITNESSING HISTORY
Of the 17 other teams in the Big Ten, 14 have won at least one game in Happy Valley. The only three that haven’t are USC, Washington, which has only been in the Big Ten for two seasons, and Indiana.
Both of Indiana’s wins over Penn State came in Bloomington, with the first being in 2013, when Penn State was still fighting through NCAA sanctions, and the most recent being the “Penx to the pylon” game in 2020 during COVID 19.
Each win came during a weird period for Penn State football, and this is certainly another weird period.
What’s also strange is Indiana having a Heisman Trophy-caliber QB, which is exactly what Fernando Mendoza is.
