For most people, Penn State football’s Playoff hopes are dead and buried.
Drew Allar can’t think that way.
Penn State isn’t mathematically eliminated from the College Football Playoff, and if it wins its last seven games— which include showdowns with top 10 opponents Ohio State and Indiana— there’s a good chance it sneaks in after all.
For Penn State to win out, Allar needs to play well, and for Allar to play well, he needs to believe Penn State can win out. So his response to a question of whether or not Penn State is still a College Football Playoff contender made sense.
“What do you think?” Allar asked with a hint of frustration in his voice.
“I don’t know,” the reporter replied.
“Yes,” Allar said.
As much as it made sense for Allar to answer the question the way he did, the question itself was fair.
Allar is in his third season as Penn State’s starting QB and, from a player standpoint, is the face of the program. A loss like the one Penn State suffered at the hands of UCLA is one that requires big picture questions, and Allar is one of the most appropriate people to field them.
Unlike the previous week against Oregon, Allar played well against UCLA, going 19 of 26 for 200 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
But it didn’t prevent what many are calling the most embarrassing loss in Penn State football history.
All Penn State can do is focus on Northwestern.
That game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 on FS1 at Beaver Stadium.
