Penn State coach James Franklin provided an encouraging update on RB Quinton Martin.
Martin has had a star-crossed career at Penn State so far.
As a true freshman last season, he spent most of the year fighting through injury.
This season, the big bet him again. Martin missed multiple weeks of fall camp, per Franklin, and thus was behind in the completion for Penn State’s No. 3 RB.
Martin didn’t appear in either of Penn State’s first two games but per Franklin, will be good to go Saturday against Villanova.
Franklin also said Penn State hasn’t decided who its No. 3 RB will be.
WHAT FRANKLIN SAID

“For Week 1, he was banged up, so that’s why he was not available,” Franklin said. “But yeah, we expect and anticipate, he’s been part of that battle. There’s three guys battling for that number three job. He’s part of it.”
THE BATTLE

Martin isn’t alone in competing for Penn State’s RB3 role. Penn State also has Corey Smith, who assumed the role last year when Martin and Cam Wallace went down. Wallace is back healthy and looked good against Nevada, with this hurdle being the highlight of it.
Before Penn State, Martin had one of the more decorated careers in WPIAL history. As a junior, he led Belle Vernon to district and state titles. He did the same as a senior and ended the season with 1,202 yards and 15 touchdowns rushing. But wait, there’s more! His receiving stats (54 catches, 753 yards, 11 touchdowns) were stellar, as well, and this is just offense we’re talking about.
Martin was also a quality defensive back for Belle Vernon to the point where, although Belle Vernon defensive coordinator Brett Berish has no doubt Martin will be a successful running back or receiver, he feels Martin would be best on the other side of the ball.
A high-end four-star recruit, Martin committed to Penn State in April 2023 and signed in December.
No. 2 Penn State hosts Villanova Saturday afternoon at 3:30 on FS1.
