Penn State began its opening drive with a lot of promise as senior running back Nicholas Singleton passed Lydell Mitchell for No. 9 all-time on the Penn State rushing list with a nine-yard rush.
The Nittany Lions however couldn’t keep the momentum.
The Golden Panther defense was able to contain senior running back Kaytron Allen to only four yards on two carries.
On a third down, there seemed to be a miscommunication between senior quarterback Drew Allar and senior wide receiver Trebor Pena. Allar was looking for Pena to cut toward the boundary, but Pena was on a go route.
James Franklin decided to roll the dice on fourth and four on the Florida International 43-yard line, where Allar once again tried to connect with Pena but the pass was turned away.
Penn State’s defense had to try to contain an opportunistic Golden Panther offense, and although it bent, it didn’t break.
Penn State forced a turnover on downs on 4th and 2 from their 13-yardline.
