Penn State hasn’t had an unbeaten regular season since 1994, and it has the best odds of changing that of any team in the country.
Per FanDuel Sportsbook, Penn State (+420) is the best bet to go 12-0.
Behind Penn State are Ohio State (+430), Notre Dame (+430), Clemson (+450) and Georgia (+500).
Ohio State, Notre Dame and Clemson each could have their goal of perfection destroyed by this time next week. No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 1 Texas, which is +650 to go 12-0. No. 6 Notre Dame is at No. 10 Miami and No. 4 Clemson hosts No. 9 LSU.
Penn State, on the other hand, is hosting Nevada Week 1, and has about as much chance of losing as I do of dating Sydney Sweeney.
There’s certainly reason to believe Penn State can go 12-0.
“Expectations are other-worldly for Penn State this season,” wrote Brad Crawford of CBS Sports, “perhaps at their highest levels since the 1980s when Joe Paterno won both of the program’s national championships over a five-year stretch. James Franklin’s roster is the best he’s ever had in Happy Valley. He’s averaging 9.6 wins per season since the 2016 campaign with five top-10 finishes during that stretch. If Penn State snaps an eight-game losing skid to the Buckeyes, there’s a great chance the Nittany Lions get to Indianapolis without a loss.”
It certainly is a big “if” that Penn State will beat Ohio State.
Since James Franklin took over as coach in 2014, PSU is 1-10 against the Buckeyes.
Although Ohio State lost plenty of talent from last year’s national championship squad, it still has arguably the best defensive (Caleb Downs) and offensive (Jeremiah Smith) players in the country, which is a big reason why its ranked No. 3.
Another big challenge for PSU will be No. 7 Oregon, which it hosts Sept. 27 for the annual White Out Game.
Those are the two regular season contests PSU fans are generally worried about the most, and they also represent two of Penn State’s three losses last season.
PSU has had 13 undefeated regular seasons, with seven of them coming in the Joe Paterno era. This would be the first invested regular season of the Franklin era, and it’s the best chance yet of that happening.
