Penn State has lost one of its receivers to a long-term injury.
Blue-White Illustrated reported Saturday morning that Kaden Saunders will be out long-term.
This is the latest chapter of what’s been a star-crossed college career for Saunders.
Once upon a time, Saunders was one of the top recruits in one of the top classes in Penn State history. But Saunders didn’t get a ton of playing time in his first two years and was injured throughout Year 3 last season. Now, there’s another setback, and this one might be the most significant in Saunders’ time at Penn State.
The good news for Penn State is that the receivers room should be vastly improved from where it’s been the previous two seasons.
Last year, Penn State’s receivers didn’t catch a single pass in the team’s Orange Bowl/College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Notre Dame.
So the program knew it had to act, and it did.
Even before the Orange Bowl, Penn State had added Kyron Hudson, who played for four seasons at USC, and Devonte Ross, who had more than 1,000, yards at Troy last season.
After the Orange Bowl, the program completed its transformation of the room by adding Trebor Pena, an All-ACC performer at Syracuse in 2024.
Before the injury, Saunders has two seasons of eligibility left. Now, he’s likely to be available for 2027 assuming he takes a medical redshirt.
PSU coach James Franklin will address reporters at 12:15 Saturday afternoon. This will kick off the school’s annual Media Day. There’s a good chance Franklin is asked about Saunders’ status and confirms it.
