A former Penn State football All-American and one of the more popular PSU players of the Millinium will be an NFL color commentator.
The Arizona Cardinals announced that A.Q. Shipley will be part of their broadcast team.
Shipley is the only player in program history to win the Rimington award, which is presented annually to America’s top center.
He won this award for his performance in the 2008 season. It was a magical year in Happy Valley. Penn State opened the year as a fringe Top 25 team and ended up defying expectations to go 11-1, win the Big Ten and earn a trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl.
From there, Shipley went onto the NFL. The pride of Moon Township, PA went to his hometown Steelers in the seventh round of the 2009 Draft.
But he never played a game for his hometown team, getting cut before the season.
Shipley stayed in PA, spending the 2010 and ‘11 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
He never played a game for Philly, either.
Finally, in 2012, Shipley found a role with the Colts, starting five games at center. After a cup of coffee with the Ravens (2013) and a brief return to Indianapolis (2014), Shipley came to Arizona.
He spent five seasons with the Cardinals, becoming the team’s regular center, before moving onto Tampa Bay ahead of the 2020 season.
That year, the Bucs won the Super Bowl, and Shipley, who had to retire due to a spinal cord injury, left with a ring.
He has some experience in media. A close friend of Pat McAfee— who also grew up in the Pittsburgh Area— Shipley is a regular guest on that show and has also co-hosted co-hosted “That’s Hockey Talk” and hosted “In The Trenches.”
