Penn State All 105: DaKaari Nelson Continuing Growth at New(er) Position

DaKaari Nelson hasn’t been playing linebacker long.

Penn State signed him because of the work he did at safety for Alabama’s Selma High School.

But Nelson’s build (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) and ability made him a realistic fit to change positions after his first season, and that’s what Penn State decided to have him to starting last year.

Why did DaKaari Nelson Switch Positions? Penn State HC James Franklin Explains

Nelson didn’t get a ton of playing time in his redshirt freshman season but did appear in 14 of Penn State’s 16 games and even made a start against Illinois Sept. 28. He got that opportunity due to an injury to Dom DeLuca, and if a similar situation arises in 2025, Nelson will still be in the fold.

Height: 6-foot-3

Weight: 220 pounds

Hometown: Livingston, Alabama

Before Penn State: Nelson was a four-year captain at Selma High School in Alabama. He was named Class 5A first-team All-State three times. Nelson committed to Penn State in June 2022. During his senior year of high school, Nelson totaled 72 tackles, seven interceptions, seven pass breakups, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Nelson also scored on defense, running back a fumble and two interceptions for touchdowns. Nelson was a four-star prospect according to 247Sports’ composite ratings and ranked as the 10th-best safety and 133rd overall player in the class. He committed to Penn State June 25, 2022.

2023: Nelson redshirted his first season, appearing in one game.

Last year: Nelson played in 14 games, starting one. He ended the year with five tackles (four solo). After playing 20 snaps against Illinois and 15 against UCLA the next week, Nelson played a total of 17 the rest of the season.

Where he stands: If all goes well, Penn State won’t need Nelson much in 2025. DeLuca is back, as is Tony Rojas. Penn State also added a former All-ACC linebacker in North Carolina transfer Amare Campbell.

But, in football, injuries tend to happen. If something unforeseen takes place, Nelson will be there.

A quote by Nelson: “I don’t have to focus on finding a home, because I’ve found a home now.” — Nelson to NSN following his commitment in June 2022

A quote about Nelson: “We’re very, very proud of him. Exciting thing is, again, this is really his first time doing it (playing linebacker), so he’s just going to get better as he gains experience and knowledge. But we’re excited about him at that position and on special teams. Really doing some nice things for us.” — James Franklin
