Penn State wrestling true freshman Luke Lilledahl is a Big Ten champion.
Similar to Braeden Davis last season, Lilledahl earned Penn State’s starting spot at 125 pounds and ended up winning the Big Ten title at that weight class.
Also similar to Davis’ win, Lilledahl’s triumph surprised many.
When he got to the semifinals and met top-seeded Matt Ramos, not many expected Lilledahl to win. After all, Ramos was not only the top seed in the Big Ten but also the country.
Lilledahl not only beat Ramos, he majored him, getting a 12-4 win.
It didn’t get much easier in the next round, with No. 2-seed Caleb Smith standing between Lilledahl and a Big Ten title.
Smith fought hard, and two late stalling calls on Lilledahl made things interesting. But Lilledahl got it done, winning 4-3.
Next up, Lilledahl will go for his first national title in Philadelphia March 20-22.
