A former Penn State QB surprised a lot of people when he left his first college coaching job after just two days and he explained his decision in a recent interview.
On the last Monday of February, Matt McGloin joined his college coach’s staff at Boston College, Bill O’Brien.
McGloin was set to be an analyst at BC.
Until he wasn’t.
Less than 48 hours after new broke that he took the job at Boston College, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that McGloin had resigned due to “family reasons.”

McGloin went into more detail about his decision earlier this week.
WHY MCGLOIN LEFT
In an interview with Borys Krawczeniuk of WVIA news, McGloin expressed remorse to Lackawanna County, where he was a commissioner before resigning to take the BC job.
“I apologize to the people of Lackawanna County for the way things have played out,” McGloin said. “I’m sorry if I offended anybody. My intentions, I know, have always been good. I always try to do the right thing and what’s best.”
Per Jeff Horvath of the Scranton Times-Tribune, the county’s Democratic Party executive committee has “until Tuesday to again submit to the county Court of Common Pleas the names of three potential replacements for former Commissioner Matt McGloin, per an order President Judge Trish Corbett signed Thursday.”
For McGloin, the whole process was a blur.
“I had only a few days or so to really make this decision, and I wasn’t able to talk about it,” he said. “Things in the professional football world, things in the college football world move very fast.”
Eventually, he realized the amount of commitment coaching in college football would take.
“There’s no way that this is going to work for me,” McGloin said, “being away from my family for an extended period of time. “And that moving our children from the only house they’ve ever known, it wasn’t the best for them.”
MCGLOIN AT PENN STATE
McGloin will always be a beloved figure in Penn State football history.
O’Brien and McGloin were among those who helped Penn State stay together in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and resulting sanctions.
PSU started that 2012 season 0-2 and looked bound for disaster but McGloin, who led the Big Ten in passing yards that season, helped the team win eight of its last ten games. As a result, his place in Penn State history is secure.
