Former Penn State QB Matt McLoin Resigns From Boston College After Less Than a Week

Matt McGloin wants Beaver Stadium to be named after his coach at Penn State, Joe Paterno

Former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin has resigned from his analyst position at Boston College after only a few days on the job.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported early Wednesday morning that McGloin has resigned due to family reasons.

This news comes less than 48 hours after news broke that McGloin would be reuniting with his college coach, Bill O’Brien at BC. O’Brien and McGloin were among those who helped Penn State stay together in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and resulting sanctions.

PSU started that 2012 season 0-2 and looked bound for disaster but McGloin, who led the Big Ten in passing yards that season, helped the team win eight of its last ten games. As a result, his place in Penn State history is secure.

McGloin had previously been involved with local politics. Last November, he was elected to the a Lackawanna (Pa.) County Board of Commissioners last November and started serving in January. McGloin is also a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees.

Before O’Brien got to Penn State, McGloin was already a big-time feel-good story. The Scranton native came to PSU as a walk-on and, during his second season, became the team’s starting QB, leading PSU from 21-0 down to compete Joe Paterno’s 400th win, beating Northwestern.

McGloin spent most of the 2011 season splitting time with Rob Bolden at QB before becoming the unquestioned starter a year later.

O’Brien is entering his second season as the boss at Boston College. He went 7-6 last year.

Both Boston College and PSU open their seasons Aug. 30. Boston College plays Fordham and Penn State plays Nevada, each at home.
